A Day at the Brisbane International Tennis Tournament

Right from the start of when I was eight years old and was given a tennis racquet by my parents for Christmas, I have been playing tennis on and off until I was 42 years of age. The reason I stopped was not due to my age but a change of life circumstances that saw me move to the city.

Every year at the beginning of January since 2009, Brisbane has hosted some of the world’s best and up-and-coming tennis players for one week in our fine city. Every year since 2009, I have wanted to go to this tournament and see some live tennis action. But not wanting to go to this by myself, never got around to it.

2016 changed this forever as I purchased four tickets to Pat Rafter Arena for the opening afternoon session on the 1st day.

I managed to find some friends to go along with, and we had a ball. We were able to travel to the complex at Tennyson free on the train, where you got off at Yeerongpilly station, and then you could either take the short 1.3km walk to the Queensland Tennis Centre or we actually took the push bike cabs there and back, which was fun. You can use any public transport for free to get there, and you just need to have your ticket for the tennis on hand.

We got to see two women’s matches and a men’s doubles match for our ticket price. Our seats were four from the front and next door to the player’s box. In the first match we watched, the player’s box was the most vocal of the crowd, which was fun to be right next door to.

You are free to roam the grounds of the tennis centre and enjoy a cool drink in the outdoor area where you can watch the big screen, grab a bite to eat and do a spot of people-watching. Look out for famous people, as you never know who you might see.

Don’t forget to check out the practice courts, as we managed to see Roger Federer having a hit-up.

Would definitely recommend this as an outing each year, but maybe next year, I might book for a few days into the tournament, and that way, I just might get to see a big-name player live on the court.
